MyTriState Review: 4 out of 5
We saw Beowulf in digital 3D, so we'll cover that first.
Digital projection seems to be taking off and we're pleased with the improved results as they years pass. This was the first 3D movie we'd seen in some time, so it's hard to have a frame of reference. They did some real obvious, "Look! This movie is in 3D!" effects but as the film rolled on, the audience either settled in with the 3D or the film just wasn't as 3D heavy anymore.
Frankly, we haven't read Beowulf in at least a decade, so we're not going to be a great judge of how close this was to the original epic. We didn't find Grendal's appearance to be what we were expecting and were not especially pleased with it. Overall, we found the design and over all digital animation to be effective, but there were times (some over head shots of horses galloping) that just didn't seem natural.
We enjoyed this film. It flowed nicely and resolved all plot issues. We think action fans will enjoy this film and, to the best of our recollection, much of the original story was preserved. The Yahoo! user community has, as of this writing, given the film a B- while critics gave it a B and we agree with this assessment. Check out their views here.
