American Gangster
MyTriState Review: 4 out of 5
We really enjoyed this movie. The acting was wonderfully realized and the director did a great job of keeping things together in a film with a lot of characters and actors who never shared a scene. The movie flowed well despite a few unnecessary looks, like Russell Crowe's sex scene and it seemed as though Denzel Washington's character had an alcoholic beverage of some kind in nearly every scene although his character never appeared drunk.
This was an entertaining film with interesting messages, both brilliant and shocking imagery as well as over all pleasing flow. The problems present were few (particularly the way the film wraps up in a montage of sorts, so different from the rest of the film's linear narrative) and the robust two hours and twenty minute running time never seemed to weigh on the audience. We can't help feeling we've seen this movie, so we found American Gangster to be a very appropriate title. It's a drug movie where the character in question just couldn't quit while they were ahead (see Blow and Scarface), but we're glad we spent the money and saw it in the theater. Brilliant, gritty imagery. Good stuff!
