Pedro Martinez injured in game 2
Well that didn't take too long, did it?
After the euphoria of game 1, it's tough for so much to feel so wrong after game 2. The extent of the injury to Pedro Martinez's leg is not yet known, but no one should be too surprised. Pedro Martinez hasn't been the Mets version of Carl Pavano, but he's pretty close. Now the Mets need another starter - Orlando Hernandez is still experimenting with his windup, which seems like a bad idea, as trying to reinvent the wheel at his age (whatever that might be) is silly. But losing extra inning games to the Marlins (a team whose payroll is just over $20 million - less than at least three Yankees yearly salary) is not acceptable. The Mets have a number one starter now, which is great - but who's number two? How many guys do you really trust in this bullpen? If the answer is two, it's going to be a long year.
A number one starter has arrived! Johan Santana pitched well - seven innings of 3 hit, 2 run ball. Can't ask for much better. Well, maybe against the minor league Florida Marlins you can, but they won the game, and that's enough for the regular season. The Mets now have what not a lot of teams can boast - a true number one, a dominant pitcher who can eat innings and spare the bullpen.
