Praise your respective God(s), the new Dave Matthews Band album is great! OK, this might be a case of generous praise as the songs cover the standard Dave Matthews lyrical topics, but there is something to be said about a great sound, and Big Whiskey & The GrooGrux King sounds amazing and after listing to Green Day's 21st Century Breakdown, this is actually a breath of fresh air. CC Sabathia pitched a nice game and looked like he was going to come out for the 8th inning until the Baltimore Orioles' bullpen imploded to allow 7 runs in the bottom of the 7th inning. Paul Taylor Dance Company
This was our first experience with modern dance, and we have to admit, we didn't exactly know what to make of it. It was sort of like ballet, but with a lot more room to maneuver, if you will; there was a lot less sense of rules or structure, and it seemed as though the performers spent a good deal of time on the ground, for one reason or another. There was also room for comedy, an art form poking fun at itself, and this seemed very welcome to the audience. We saw three pieces: "...Byzanthium," a contemplation on the fall of the Byzantine empire with music by Edgard Varese, "Changes," featuring music sung by The Mamas and The Papas, and "Arden Court," with music by William Boyce. We think this is a plan that's long over due, as the tri state area, regardless of state, is feeling their budgets crunched and combine that with the tri state area's zillions of bridges, tunnels and causeways that need maintenance and repairs. Giants sign to Brandon Jacobs to 4 year deal
The Giants have signed Brandon Jacobs to a 4 year deal worth $25 million. By baseball standards, its not a lot of money, but by normal people standards, its crazy money, and by 2009 standards it's insane in the damn membrane money. But, such is the rewards for successful entertainers! Read more... or check out more from our Giants Blog
President Obama addresses congress on the economy, energy, education and healthcare
President Barack Obama gave us an earful on where we need to go, but not exactly how we're going to get there. But, if significant progress can be made in the areas of the economy, energy, education and healthcare, that'd be an amazing achievement. If the federal government can prod the banking system to start lending and get credit flowing again, that's more than half the battle and will grease the wheels on a number of other issues, but how you actually do this, we have no idea. Rangers fire Tom Renney
As the New York Rangers have tumbled out of playoff contention and the clock is really ticking away, you can't fire the players, so the Rangers have fired their coach, Tom Renney. If this will get them to the playoffs, we will bow down to GM Glen Sather, but we have no reason to believe this will work, because Sather's firings have never done anything for the franchise before... Stephon Marbury is gone!
Stephon Marbury is finally, officially gone. He's hardly been around anyway, but the partying of ways is official. This is good for the spirit if not for the body, as this won't do much in the way of addition by subtraction, but, there it is, folks. Read more... or check out more from our Knicks Blog
Acting Oscars dominated by politics
Any time the film that wins best picture, namely, Slumdog Millionaire, doesn't get any acting nods, we have to take a closer look at who did win and what films they were in. So, Sean Penn won for Milk and Kate Winslet for The Reader - both actors are established veterans with undeniable talents. Read more... or check out more from our Movies Blog
Slumdog Millionaire
We've only seen two of the movies nominated for Best Picture for the 81st Academy Awards, but we're picking Slumdog Millionaire.
Slumdog Millionaire is the story of Jamal, Madhur and their fellow orphan Latika in an emerging India as Jamal recounts the story of his life which revolves around answering questions on the game show, Who wants to be a Millionaire?. We admit, Millionaire's involvement is part of the reason this film didn't get a five from us. Read more... or check out more from our Movie Reviews Blog
A Salary Cap is NOT Coming to Major League Baseball
Major League Baseball will never have a salary cap, no matter what Boston Red Sox owner John Henry says. See, Henry doesn't seem to understand that the Red Sox are one of the haves, like the Yankees; these are two teams that have money, pure and simple. What most people don't understand is that a salary cap, or maximum payroll limit, would also mean a salary minimum. Read more... or check out more from our Sports Blog
ARod News Cycle Fatigue Syndrome
We're sad to report that we've contracted ANCFS - yes, that's right, the dreaded ARod News Cycle Fatigue Syndrome. We understand why it's such a big story, we're just tired of it - not that we ever cared much in the first place - but we understand. Read more... or check out more from our Yankees Blog
The Reader
Its hard to give much of a summary of this movie without giving too much away, so we'll only talk about the first act here: After World War II, a teenage boy has a relationship with an older woman in Germany. OK, that's our summary sentence in the style of TV guide. Kate Winslet really rocks the house in this film. Read more...or check out more from our Movie Reviews Blog
Nets keep Vince Carter
The New Jersey Nets shocked us when they didn't trade Vince Carter at the trade deadline. The only reason to keep Carter is because they think they have a legitimate shot at a title - or is it? It might come down to dollars and 'sense' beyond the rest of the contract money owed to Vince Carter. Read more... or check out more from our Nets Blog
Reaction to ARod Press Conference
Alex Rodriguez told us more or clarified more about his steroid use - we didn't really care, but, you just can't ignore a media event of this size. How often do you hear someone asking reporters to make sure they don't trample anyone? This is probably why we pity the guy more than we loathe him - a veritable three ring circus follows him around everywhere he goes. He doesn't help the situation, but that's the reality. You have to wonder if its worth more money than you could possibly spend in a life time... well, Hammer could probably spend it! Read more... or check out more from our Yankees Blog
Rangers fans have nothing to smile about
Feb 16: The New York Rangers are 3-5-2 in their last 10 games. Their head coach seems to be days (if not minutes) away from being fired. The Dallas Stars destroyed them by an excruciating 8 goals for a final score of 2-10 Dallas and then the Philadelphia Flyers dominated them at home 2-5. This is not good. In fact, this is very bad. They're having every type of issue a hockey team can have. Read more... or check out more from our Rangers Blog
Happy Valentine's Day!
We hope you have a fun, safe Valentine's Day planned that will stimulate both you, your partner, and the economy. For God's sake, go out to dinner! Buy some flowers and candy, for the sake of all that is! OK, back to love. You might have heard that "Loving you is easy 'cuz you're beautiful" but, it should be pointed out that it's not love but intercourse that's easy when your partner is beautiful. It might be easy to trick yourself into believing you love someone because they're a pocketful of handsome, but there's more to love than that. That's just our take. If you're still cruising the single scene, try some of our patented recession pick up lines. Read more... or check out more from our Culture Blog

Baseball's Steroid Controversy is a Joke
Sure, we're totally sick of the conversation about steroids in baseball, but that's not what makes it a pathetic joke; it's really the lack of adequate testing for all performance enhancing drugs. Sure, they're testing for steroids, but they're not testing for human growth hormone. So, who cares if ARod confessed that he used steroids in his three seasons with the Texas Rangers? Who cares if 103 other players also tested positive? All of them and any other players could be using human growth hormone right now, so who cares? Read more... or check out more from our Sports Blog
Prediction comes to pass as Steelers win Super Bowl
Since we picked so poorly in the MLB playoffs, it's nice to finally get one right and see the Pittsburgh Steelers crowned Super Bowl champions. Sure, we like Kurt Warner, but what ya gonna do? Somebody had to win, and somebody had to lose. Was there some tough calls in the game? Sure; it's football, there always are. Could they of at least reviewed that Warner fumble? Guess not. ESPN searches for fattest Yankee
We kid you not, folks - ESPN's Page 2 is running an article on which Yankee had the most pin stripes on their uniform. Seriously. Paul Lukas wrote the article. We're not kidding. Somebody thought that ESPN users would be interested in this. Now, we know Page 2 is supposed to be hilarious, and we know Peter Gammons isn't the only Red Sox fan at ESPN, but come on... Bernie Williams to play Winter Ball, WBC
Our beloved former Yankee Bernie Williams will be playing Winter Ball in Puerto Rico for the Carolina Giants in preparation for playing with the Puerto Ricon team team in next spring's World Baseball Classic. Amazon releasing Kindle 2
Amazon is releasing the Kindle 2, an electronic book reader. Who is this product for? We're of the belief that several pieces of paper binded together is pretty state of the art and has been since the Renaissance. But lets take a step back - have you or do you know ANYONE who has purchased an electronic book? It sounds like there are some neat features, like switching from read mode to audio book mode via text to speech software by Nuance. Read more... or check out more from our Books Blog
Reactions to ARod Steroids "allegations"
First off, are we nuts, or did this story already break two years ago? ARod ran around and denied it... anyone? Hello?
We have to ask ourselves, at the end of the steroid era day (and in terms of being interested in this, it is the end of the day for us), we just don't care. We thought we cared about this issue, but we don't. ARod is an entertainer, and entertainers do stuff like this for... hm, maybe money, fame, even immortality? We can't say, but we just don't care any more. Professional athletes use steroids? Yes, we knew this. We've seen Olympians stripped of their medals, football's "False Glory: Steelers and Steroids : The Steve Courson Story" and yes, the amazingly boring Barry Bonds saga that seems like it will never end. Yankees sign Mark Teixeria
In their best move of the off season, the Yankees have signed Mark Teixeria to be their first baseman for eight years at $180 million. This is a big pickup for them as they've done several things at once: kept Teixeria out of Boston, which would have been a disaster for the Yankees; plugged a big hole at 1st base; picked up a desperately needed #3 hitter to replace Bobby Abreu and gotten the team younger and more athletic. This was the best business and baseball decision the Yankees could have made. Read more... or check out more from our Yankees Blog
Yankees sign AJ Burnett
The Yankees have reportedly signed AJ Burnett for $81.5 million over five years. Like the CC Sabathia deal, it's an order of broccoli sautéed in garlic sauce, extra spicy. Was this a good move? Yes, we think so - we always prefer free agent signings because we want the Yankees to hold on to their best prospects and only use them for emergency in season trades. Some of the Yankees brightest stars of recent memory have been home grown. Read more... or check out more from our Yankees Blog
Yankees sign CC Sabathia
Well, everyone is saying CC Sabathia has signed with the New York Yankees for $161 million over seven years. That's a spicy falafel ball. There are at least two very different ways of looking at this deal. For the Yankees, not making the playoffs last year is akin to not playing "God Bless America" during the seventh inning stretch. They're opening a new ballpark for 2009, and they need a serious product they can market to advertisers and their fan base who'll see a ticket price increase during a season when most of us aren't exactly flush with cash. Oh yeah, and they're really short on starting pitchers. Read more... or check out more from our Yankees Blog
Gran Torino
Clilnt Eastwood dispenses his own brand of justice that we've all come to know and love in Gran Torino. You know how it is; you mess with Clint, well, he's tough, he can handle it. You mess with his neighbors, teenagers who are not tough, well, you're bound to make him mad. And that's a mistake. Read more... or check out more from our Movie Reviews Blog

W.
Oliver Stone's new film, W., won't satisfy Democrats, who'll say Stone was too soft on Bush (that's hilarious, by the way) and Republicans, who'll feel that Stone took some cheap shots at the commander in chief's intelligence during a presidential election campaign, even if it's not Bush's.

Barack Obama sworn in at frigid Inauguration
President Barack Hussein Obama was sworn in as the 44th president of the United States on January 20th, 2009 before a veritable sea of people on a chilly winter's day. He spoke of not sacrificing freedom for safety and for making choices that should have already been made - essentially, it went something like this:
The previous administration broke some stuff and ignored some stuff. The Obama administration is going to fix some stuff and address the ignored stuff - if you're not down with that, please, get out of the way now. Read more... or check out more from our Politics Blog
Barack Obama Wins Presidency
Will someone teach spell check to learn President Barack Obama's name?

Giants eliminated from playoffs
"D'oh!"
Well, that was quick - not that the Giants have been inspiring much confidence lately anyway, but it was still sad to see the Giants go down to the Philadelphia Eagles as their reign as Super Bowl Champions steadily comes to a close.
In two previous meeting with the Philadelphia Eagles, our New York Giants won the first meeting in a tough Sunday night game full of anxiety in Philadelphia. We went to their second meeting at Giants Stadium in the good old Meadowlands only to be disappointed by the Giants poor play and decision making. Read more... or check out more from our Giants Blog
Jets miss playoffs
We hate to say we told you so, but, as predicted, the Jets missed the playoffs again, despite the addition of Brett Favre. After watching him in those games after their 8-3 start, he was just awful. So many interceptions. They need to move forward and spend their money elsewhere; bringing back Brett Favre would be a mistake. Firing Eric Mangini is only the first step on the road to recovering. Jets Shaun Ellis Won't Get Suspended
In an attempted to keep up with the New York Giants, the New York Jets decided they needed their own scandal, and Shaun Ellis obliged by getting pulled over in Hanover, NJ for speeding and being cited for possession of marijuana and driving without insurance. Well done, there. Read more... or check out more from our Jets Blog
Stephon Marbury is a never ending problem for the Knicks
"How do you solve a problem like [Stephon Marbury]?" No idea.
Now that the Knicks have banned Stephon Marbury, he said he wants to play or be released and won't accept a buyout, for whatever reason, we can't guess - he just wants to screw the Knicks hard, but we'll get back to that. Cuttino Mobley is apparently very ill and may retire, given the Knicks a hole at guard, and they still don't seem interested in Marbury playing for them. Mets trade for JJ Putz, deal Aaron Heilman, then deal Scott Schoeneweis
The New York Mets have about worn out the trade market, shipping out familiar parts for seemingly shinny new ones. By dealing Aaron Heilman, who reportedly issued a start me or trade me ultimatum and bringing in JJ Putz as KRod's setup man, the Mets have improved their bullpen, even if Putz has a history of injury trouble. We really thought Scott Schoeneweis was a good acquisition for the Mets, and his first season was pretty much a bust, even if his numbers did improve last year... but, he wasn't someone the Mets really trusted when the gave the ball, so this might be addition by subtraction here. Mets sign Francisco Rodriguez
The New York Mets have signed the best closer available in Francisco Rodriguez for a 3 year, $30+ million dollar deal. It's a really good deal for the Mets and sort of a downer for the other closers on the free agent market, or anyone who wanted to trade their closer (Seattle), because KRod's agent was saying he wanted 5 years, $75 million... but that kind of a deal is Mariano Rivera country. Yahoo profits decline
Since the third quarter ended, you may have heard how Yahoo!'s profits are in the toilet. How did this happen? It's pretty simple: Yahoo! probably makes most of their money from pay per click searches - you know, the 'sponsored ads' on the page. Well, they've really screwed their system up. Star Wars Lost Scene

Guns N' Roses Chinese Democracy
Wikipedia cites that Guns N' Roses new album, Chinese Democracy, has been in production since 1995. From that point to now, no original band members remain besides Axel Rose - we're pleased to note that his voice has held up well over the nearly two decades worth of waiting. Now, we're the first to admit that we're not the biggest Guns N'Roses fans (it's hard to get behind a band that has an apostrophe in their name), but we were curious to see what this album would sound like without Slash, one of the biggest names in hard rock guitar. Apparently, the line up we came to know just couldn't get along.

Rockefeller Center Christmas Tree Lighting 2008
We took in the Christmas Tree Lighting at Rockefeller Center again this year - it was a cold night, which we thankfully avoided. From high atop the Rock, we saw performers (or rather watched them on television) like Beyonce, David Cook, Jonas Brothers, Faith Hill, Tony Bennett, Harry Connick Jr., Mily Cyrus, Aretha Franklin, and probably others... it was funny to here people yelling (and perhaps swooning) at the appearance of The Today Show’s Al Roker. Seriously. People were all pumped up about seeing Al, and who can blame them? Al knows weather. Read more...
